Shortly after japan's attack on Pearl Harbor ,Hawaii Japan wanted some of the Philippines " Japan occupied the Philippines for over three years, until the surrender of Japan. A highly effective guerilla campaign by Philippine resistance forces controlled sixty percent of the islands, mostly jungle and mountain areas" (Wiki). Japan wanted to take over the pacific peice by peice. The philippines had some materials that they wanted in fact "... Japanese had promised independence for the islands after occupation, they initially organized a Council of State through which they directed civil affairs until October 1943, when they declared the Philippines an independent republic.[13] Most of the Philippine elite, with a few notable exceptions, served under the Japanese" (Wiki). They wanted to be in charge of the philippines and turn their government to the government similar in Japan." The 76,000 starving and sick American and Filipino defenders on Bataan surrendered on April 9, 1942, and were forced to endure the infamous BataanBataan Death March on which 7,000–10,000 died or were murdered. The 13,000 survivors on Corregidor surrendered on May 6" (WIKI). The united States couldn't' take japans harsh punishment and surrendered.
"At the start of WW2, the Philippine Islands were United States territory as per the 1898 Treaty of Paris" (DATA). Japan did not like this they wanted the Philippines to themselves so they decided to attack it. "In the American capital of Washington DC, Henry Stimson and George Marshall believed that a strong presence of American air power in the Philippine Islands would discourage Japanese aggression" (DATA). Japan was to strong and the United States could not handle them plus Japan did brutal things to US prisoners because Japan believes and soldier shall fight to the death. "At 1030 hours on 6 May, Wainwright surrendered at Corregidor. The last US troops in the Philippine Islands surrendered on Mindanao on 12 May, and organized resistance in the islands would soon wane" (DATA).
"The Philippines was purchased by the United States in 1898, following the Spanish American War. After a few decades of American control, the Philippines was established as a Commonwealth of the United States in 1935, with the promise that on July 4th, 1947, the islands would gain full independence" (STAMPS). The Philippines was never given the chance because shortly after the bombing of Pearl Japan took over the Philippines. "The remaining US/Philippine troops fought until their surrender on the Bataan Peninsula in April 1942 and on Corregidor in May. Over 80,000 prisoners of war were captured by the Japanese at Bataan and were forced to walk to a prison camp more than 100 kilometres to the north in what would be known as the “Bataan Death March” (STAMPS). this was important section of the war almost 10,000 men died. This really weakened the Americans. "The Japanese military authority quickly organized a new government in the Philippines through an established “Council of State”, which directed civilian affairs. After “liberating” the Philippines, the Japanese promised independence for the islands, which was implemented in October of 1943 with the formation of the Republic of the Philippines." (DATA).
